Moçambicanos acusados no caso de estupro colectivo na África do Sul

South African police announced that 14 men have been formally charged with the gang rape of eight women in Krugersdorp last month, including Mozambicans.

Of the seven individuals who appeared Thursday (11) at the Krugersdorp court, six are from Mozambique and Lesotho, and the seventh is South African, said prosecutor spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane.

According to VOA, one of the accused is under the age of 16, while the others range in age from 23 to 48, Mjonondwane revealed.

News24 quotes Mjonondwane as saying that more suspects may be connected to the case.

The rape took place in late July in an abandoned mine outside Krugersdorp. The eight victims were part of a cast filming a video clip.

It was reported that in addition to the rape, the perpetrators, who were reportedly armed, assaulted the film crew.

In the aftermath, police detained more than 80 people, including suspected illegal miners from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Lesotho.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and prompted residents to protest against the illegal miners.
