The Judicial Court of Maputo City (TJCM) today sentenced the former Minister of Labor, Helena Taipo, to 16 years in prison for her involvement in the case of embezzlement of 113 million meticals from the Directorate of Migratory Labor (DTM).
The TJCM also sentenced seven other defendants involved in the same corruption case to prison terms, namely: Pedro Taimo, José António Monjane and Anastácia Samuel Zita, all to 16 years in prison; Dalila Zubaida Lalgi, Alfredo Lucas, Baltazar Teófilo Mungoi and Hermenegildo Nataniel, all to 12 years.
The court decided to acquit two defendants for lack of evidence of participation in this corruption case, namely Issufo Francisco and Sidónio dos Anjos.
Throughout the trial, Taipo, 60, always denied his involvement in the case, referring explanations to the Directorate of Migratory Labor (DTM), the entity that manages the money resulting from the deferred portion of the salaries of Mozambican miners working in South Africa.
