About 3,500 inhabitants of Salamanga now have potable water

Just over 3,500 inhabitants of the administrative post of Salamanga, in Matutuíne district, Maputo province, now benefit from drinking water, provided by a supply system, inaugurated Wednesday, July 13, by the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Cecília Chamutota.

This is a system, budgeted at 36 million meticais, financed in the form of a donation by the UK government, through the Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), with an installed capacity to supply the precious liquid to 15 thousand inhabitants, in a water supply network of 5 kilometers.

On the occasion, the Deputy Minister, Cecilia Chamutota, said that with the inauguration the coverage rate in Salamanga increases from 41% to 91%, which contributes to the Matutuine district going from 79.4% to 81.2% in rural areas, benefiting about 35,456 people.

"Today we are inaugurating the Salamanga Water Supply System, which now, at the start, benefits about 3,578 people, but with an installed capacity to benefit about 14,400 people within 20 years," said the governor.

For her part, the British High Commissioner in Mozambique, NneNne Iwuji-Eme, said that the inauguration of the enterprise, in Salamanga, is part of the support that the United Kingdom provides to the Government of Mozambique's National Programme for Water Supply and Rural Sanitation (PRONASAR).

"With this support, we intend to contribute to the transformation of the provision of water and sanitation services, enabling a greater response to the demand of the neediest communities in rural Mozambique, and especially to communities affected by climate change," concluded the UK High Commissioner.

It is important to highlight that the UK is financing the construction of around 140 water systems, including 15 systems in Maputo province, including the Salamanga system in Matutuine district.
