The world is facing a severe food crisis caused by the Russia-Ukraine war that has had a huge impact on food production and consequently on food prices globally.
This scenario, led here major agricultural powers, including the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia, pledged yesterday to ensure world food security despite the shocks caused by the war in Ukraine.
"We pledge to work together to ensure that there is enough food for everyone, including the poorest, most vulnerable and displaced," 51 members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) said in a joint statement, quoted by Lusa.
The countries also promise to keep agricultural and food markets "open, predictable and transparent, and not impose unjustified trade restrictive measures" on agri-food products or products essential for agricultural production.
According to the news source, the signatory members also demand that products purchased by the World Food Program in the first line to try to compensate for the losses caused on the world agricultural market by the lack of production in Ukraine be exempted from any export restrictions or bans.
Russia and Ukraine are two major exporters of products such as wheat, corn, and sunflower oil. Russia is also the world's largest supplier of fertilizers and gas.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, and the sanctions imposed on Moscow following that offensive have led to the interruption of deliveries of wheat and other products from the two countries, increasing food and fuel prices.
