Senegal became African Cup of Nations (CAN) champions for the first time this Sunday by beating Egypt, after so much sweat during regulation time with no goals, that it took the match to overtime and finally the last resort, penalty kicks.
It was only in the "one on one" game where Senegal managed to touch the back of the opponent's net, winning the game by four balls to two.
Abdelmonem, who hit the post of the Senegalese goal, and Lasheen, who allowed Mendy to save, missed two penalties for the Egyptians. On the other side, Sadio Mané converted the decisive penalty, after goalkeeper Gabasky still saved Bouna Sarr's shot.
Senegal, whose best record was appearing in the finals in 2002 and 2019, became, by their third appearance in a final, the 15th country to win the CAN.
Senegal had a penalty kick in the 7th minute, but the Egyptian goalkeeper outplayed Sadio Mané and was decisive again in extra time, denying Dieng the goal on two occasions.
Sadio Mané, who had missed the penalty in the 7th minute, would end up being the hero by hitting the decisive shot in the penalty shootout.
