Bad weather dislodges 270 people in the central region

One person died and 270 others were left homeless due to the bad weather registered during the weekend in the central province of Manica.

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD), revealed today, without specifying the number, that the heavy rains and winds also destroyed classrooms and some social and economic infrastructure.

"There are more than 50 houses that were totally and partially destroyed, leaving families out in the open," said Vernito Gonga, head of INGD's technical department in Manica, quoted today by the Mozambique Information Agency (AIM).

"We have identified the families and they are receiving our support in food items and hygiene 'kits'. We have also delivered tents to house some families who have become homeless," said Gonga.

For now, given the rainy season, Gonga said that boats have been positioned for search and rescue work in the province, and local emergency committees have been reactivated to sensitize the population to take precautionary measures.

According to INGD, a total of 96 people died due to cyclones and other natural disasters in the country during the last rainy season.
