"Covid-19 control measures may be revised," warns Ilesh Jani

The director-general of the National Institute of Health (INS), Ilesh Jani, said this Wednesday that the preventive measures approved by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19 may be readjusted in the coming days in the face of a possible worsening of the epidemiological situation in the country.

For now, Ilesh Jani, revealed that the health sector is closely monitoring the evolution of the health situation in the country and in the region. However, despite the fact that the country is going through a moment of low transmission, with a positivity rate below one percent, a fact allied to the reduction of hospitalizations and deaths, the source stressed that the situation deserves constant attention.

"We are monitoring the various epidemiological indicators and the system used to define the restriction measures, and if the trend is that the epidemic is worsening, of course the measures can be readjusted," Jani advanced.

He added that South Africa, especially Gauteng province, through which it borders Mozambique, is beginning to experience a significant increase in the number of cases without, however, being reflected in the rise in hospitalizations.

The source also explained that the country already has the capacity for sequencing the genome of the new coronavirus, with the training of health professionals and laboratory technicians and the allocation of equipment having been completed.
