Covid-19: Portuguese government guarantees repatriation flights to and from Mozambique

The Portuguese government asks for a lot of patience for the inconvenience caused by the suspension of flights to and from Mozambique as of today, Monday. Still, it guarantees to proceed with repatriation flights.

According to the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, the Portuguese government will conduct repatriation flights for those who are in Mozambique and want to return to Portugal, and vice versa.

"The only thing I ask for now is a lot of patience, since it was a very sudden decision, because the news of the appearance of a new variant are from last week and it was necessary for the European Union to act immediately, so I ask for patience and apologize for all the inconveniences of this decision," stresses the Portuguese minister.

In view of these measures, the governor stressed that Portugal will promote the necessary flights so that Portuguese citizens living in Mozambique who need to return to Portugal can do so and, conversely, Mozambican citizens living in Portugal who want to return to their country.

According to the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), flights to and from Mozambique will be suspended from 00:00 today, November 29, following concerns and containment measures in the European Union raised by the detection of a new variant in South Africa, potentially more infectious, which the World Health Organization (WHO) called Omicron.
