Climate Change: The New China-US Cooperation Link

China's President Xi Jinping said today that climate change is of such importance that it could bring about a new configuration in relations between his country and the United States of America (USA), as the two countries transition to a low-carbon, green economy.

The Chinese president made the remarks in the course of a virtual meeting with his US counterpart Joe Biden.

On the occasion, he promised that his country will make the largest significant cuts in carbon emission intensity worldwide within the shortest timeframe, a task that will require major efforts.

"China delivers what it says," he said, indicating that ecological conservation has become a popular concept and social consensus in China.

Noting that China is still the largest developing country in the world, Xi said that all countries need to uphold the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities and find a balance between dealing with climate change and protecting livelihoods.

On the other hand, the Chinese head of state called on developed countries to remain determined to fulfill their responsibilities and obligations and maintain consistency in policies.

"What the world needs is more solidarity and cooperation," Xi pointed out.
