Maputo to have 80 gas-powered buses starting in December

The Metropolitan Transport Agency of Maputo (AMT), will count, as of next month, with 80 buses powered by natural gas. This is an investment valued at $3.5 million, which is intended to reduce the operational cost of transportation.

According to the technical administrator of AMT, Armando Bembele, the buses manufactured in China will arrive in the country, with the wiring already assembled, and the placement of the electronic ticketing system is still missing.

Bembele advanced that the 80 buses correspond to the first phase of the project, of a planned fleet of one thousand, for the next five years, throughout the country.

"Using this system will reduce the operating cost of transportation, since natural gas is 50% less expensive compared to conventional fuels," the administrator explained.

However, Bembele warned that this reduction will not entail a decrease in the transportation fare, as the current rates, set in 2017, are out of line with reality.

"It is assumed that the use of gas prospecting in the country will become massive in a few years," he added.
