FEMATRO defends "severe punishment" to stop traffic accidents

The transporters' association wants there to be severe punishments against offending drivers to stop road accidents in the country. According to the president of the Mozambican Federation of Road Carriers Associations (FEMATRO), Castigo Nhamane, "there must be severe accountability for the perpetrators of these accidents.

Nhamane, who was reacting to the traffic accident that resulted in the death of 17 people this Saturday, in the district of Manhiça, considers that there are several drivers who get involved in accidents and end up unpunished.

"Even with evidence that they were at fault in the accidents, especially drivers who carry passengers. What happens is that these same people then go back to work in another car. This is impunity," stressed Castigo Nhamane.

The president of FEMATRO also criticizes, the existence of several accidents that culminated in fatalities, but without holding the offending drivers accountable.

"If we find that this public transportation driver, who is well now, was at fault, he must be held accountable in an exemplary manner," he said.
