"Cost of living in Mozambique tends to get worse," says OTM

The cost of living in the country is getting worse every day. The basic food basket defined by the Organization of Mozambican Workers (OTM-Central Union) costs 19 thousand meticais, while the minimum wage is only 4 691 meticais.

The basic food basket list drawn up by OTM, quoted by VOA, includes: Rice, corn flour, butter beans, peanuts, carapau fish, vegetables and legumes, bread vegetable oil, brown sugar, lighting oil, bingo soap, transportation (two daily commutes) and coal.

The recent fuel price hike, in the range of 7% to 22%, has worsened the cost of living in the country, as it has caused several prices of goods and services to rise.

Economist Egas Francisco says that the current situation makes life even more difficult for Mozambicans, particularly those earning the minimum wage.

The situation may get worse if transporters increase the cost of travel, as Fematro president Castigo Nhamane said.
