35 years have passed since the death of Samora Machel

Today, 35 years have passed since the death of the first President of the Republic of Mozambique, Samora Machel, but the real causes of his death are still a mystery.

And it is through this passage that Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi and his South African counterpart, President Cyril Ramaphosa, spoke at an event to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the death of former Mozambican leader Samora Machel this afternoon.

The ceremony is organized by the two countries at the site of the accident that took Machel's life in Mbuzini, Mpumalanga.

It should be noted that Machel died when the plane in which he, along with other African leaders, was flying collided with the Lebombo Mountains in 1986.

According to the South African Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the event is an opportunity to remember, honor and "express appreciation to those who gave their lives to ensure that South African countries achieved their freedom and democracy."

"President Samora Machel's regime was instrumental in the independence of South Africa and several other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. Those who helped in the liberation of South Africa wholeheartedly embraced South African liberation warriors fighting to destroy the apartheid regime," the department said.

Samora Moisés Machel was the first independent President of the Republic of Mozambique. He governed the country from 1976 to 1986 when he died.

During those years, he stood out for his straightforwardness, courage, and spirit of leadership. His achievements are recognized not only in Mozambique, but also throughout Africa and the world.
