The strengthening and expansion of the transmission system and interconnection with neighboring countries is one of the priorities of the public company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).
In an interview to "Notícias" newspaper, Luís Ganje, EDM's Market Operation Director, explained that the objective is to take advantage of the quantity and diversity of energy resources that the country has, from non-renewable to renewable.
"Just cite the example of the Temane Thermal Power Plant (CTT) project of 450MW capacity and the 650 km (400KV) line between Temane and Maputo, through which energy can be drained to the region, through South Africa. Another undertaking concerns the interconnection with Malawi, from Tete (about 200 kilometers of 400KV line)," he said.
Ganje said that the reinforcement of the northern corridor, in the Chimuara-Alto Molocue section at 400KV (450km), the Metoro Solar Power Plant project and other initiatives already in advanced stages of development will be crucial for the company's strategic positioning in the region.
These efforts come at a time when the aluminum smelting company Mozal is negotiating with the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy for better alternatives in electricity supply, as its contract with the South African supplier Eskom ends in 2026.
According to the source, there is already an approximation between EDM and Mozal, but it is a complex process, taking into account the constraints required by this type of industry for the supply of electricity within the quantities and quality required.
