The main opposition party Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (Renamo) today rejected a possible postponement of district elections in 2024, pointing out that the ballot is part of the peace process, deepening democracy and national reconciliation.
"The holding of the 2024 district elections stems from the fulfillment of the constitutional command that was reached after a long and winding political dialogue between Renamo and the Government of the Republic of Mozambique," said Saimone Macuiana, president of the national jurisdictional council of the main opposition party.
Macuiana was reacting to the appeal that the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, launched on the last 28th for "a reflection" on the feasibility of holding district elections in 2024.
Today, at the press conference, the president of the Renamo judicial council emphasized that postponing the elections would be a violation of the Constitution of the Republic, because this is provided for in the country's fundamental law, following the understandings reached between the executive and the party.
"It would be neither good nor ethical, at a time when the military affairs process is running smoothly, to backtrack on the decentralization process," Saimone Macuiana stressed.
On "military matters," the official was referring to the ongoing process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of the armed arm of Renamo.
He said that the main opposition party is not available for dialogue or negotiations about a change in the Constitution of the Republic that would make it possible to postpone the district elections.
"Renamo appeals to the Government of the Republic of Mozambique to do everything possible for the strict fulfillment of the agreements, both in letter and in spirit," stressed Saimone Macuiana.
