The Mozambican government has said that the process of paying teachers overtime is still underway, admitting, however, that the first phase has not yet been completed due to processing failures.
The information was provided by government spokesman Inocêncio Impissa, who stressed that significant progress had been made in the process.
Quoted by NewsThe source said that the central government had already transferred the amount needed to cover the expenses in the provinces, and that the provinces had also sent the money to the districts, where the teachers were being paid. However, he acknowledged that in some provinces the principle of proportionality, which consists of paying part of the amount owed, was not being observed.
"What has happened is that managers, for some reason, have decided to pay some teachers to the detriment of others. In the meantime, what we want is for all the teachers to feel the signal in their accounts," said the spokesman.
With regard to the irregularities that are being detected, Impissa said that corrective work is already underway to ensure that the process runs smoothly, and reiterated that "the government is working to complete the payments, and will soon move on to the second phase, with a view to settling the debt in full".
Inocêncio Impissa also guaranteed that a digital system will be introduced to allow overtime to be monitored and paid immediately, to avoid accumulation.
