Around 100 former Renamo guerrillas in Nampula decided to close down the provincial delegation on Tuesday (04) to demand the removal of the party leadership and to press for the holding of the recently postponed National Council.
For the former guerrillas, the postponement of that meeting is aimed at keeping Ossufo Momade and his squad at the head of the party, despite complaints about their poor performance in the October 2024 elections. The militants also accuse the Partridge leadership of exclusionary practices in discussions about the future of the party.
Quoted by VOAformer guerrilla Carolina Yahaia said that her colleagues don't want the deputy, Abida Aba, to continue, because "she doesn't want to collaborate with us, who are former combatants and are fighting for democracy.
Ernesto Douglas, also a former guerrilla, is calling for Ossufo Momade to step down. "We're not going to take away the merit of what he has done, but if it's a case of fatigue, it's also necessary to make a statement. Now, at this moment, we are asking for the National Council to be held" to define the party's next steps," added Douglas.
In view of this, Renamo's spokesman in the province, Nelson Carvalho, says that the statutes must be respected.
"At no time did Renamo's political delegate, Abiba Aba Linha; and general Ossufo Momade deny leaving office," but the choice of a new leadership can only be made at a congress.
