Cabo Delgado: Renamo soldiers close delegation and set fire to party material

Cabo Delgado: Militares da Renamo encerram delegação e ateiam fogo a material do partido

Some Renamo soldiers closed down the political delegation in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, and set fire to the party's publicity material.

The group is demanding the resignation of the current leader of the political formation, Ossufo Momade, for allegedly leading the party to ruin.

The group presented a statement to the press this week indicating that the delegation would be closed on Thursday (24) and subsequently all the other party delegations throughout the province.

They allege that Ossufo Momade has not fully complied with the agreements made between the party's late leader, Afonso Dhlakama, and the former president of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, on the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of Renamo men.

They accuse him of betraying the people when, supposedly on his own, he negotiated with the Frelimo government to postpone the district elections scheduled for 2024.

According to the protesters, Ossufo Momade has never even held a dialogue with the former Renamo guerrillas to find out about their concerns.

Momade is also accused of misusing party funds, and of having ordered the cutting of district political delegates' allowances since 2020.

For the group, the Renamo leader has turned the party into private property.

"We no longer want Mr. Ossufo Momade to lead the party. And we [the senior generals] have ordered, at the level of the country, the destruction of all pamphlets and propaganda photographs of Mr. Ossufo Momade, because we don't need him anymore," they appealed.
