Mozambique and Malawi seek mechanisms to simplify cross-border trade

Moçambique e Maláui buscam mecanismos de simplificação do comércio transfronteiriço

Mozambique and Malawi are looking for mechanisms to simplify procedures so that cross-border trade flows more smoothly. To this end, a team from Mozambique's Ministry of Industry and Trade is meeting with the Malawian counterpart in the city of Blantyre to seek consensus.

According to a Radio MozambiqueThis is the third round of negotiations to reach a simplification agreement between the two countries.

The initiative, financed by the World Bank to the tune of 150 million dollars over six years, aims to strengthen reforms in the implementation of trade between Mozambique and Malawi.

According to the director of the Legal Office of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Lázaro Macuácua, if the agreement is reached, "Mozambique's mission will be to implement improvements along the Beira and Nacala corridors, and on the Ponta d'Ouro border with South Africa via the Maputo Corridor".

Malawi, for its part, is committed to strengthening its trade and transportation network, which seems to be a priority for a landlocked country, as it could help diversify exports and integrate into the regional and global economy.

The project has four main components, such as reducing trade costs through trade facilitation, including border infrastructure and reforms to the regulatory framework.

It also proposes to strengthen regional coordination and support project implementation, increase investment in regional value chains and improve transport and market access infrastructure.
