Mozambique: WB finances $300 million for energy and Internet

In Mozambique the data show that access to energy remains low. That is, in rural areas only 8% of the population has access to energy. The situation improves in urban areas, with figures pointing to about 72% of the population.

In terms of the use of telecommunications services, the scenario is the same. Only 30% of the population uses the Internet.

And it is in an attempt to reverse this scenario, that the World Bank (WB) will finance in about $300 million to expand the electricity grid to more than 3% of the country's population, 1.1 million beneficiaries, expand access to off-grid electricity and clean cooking solutions, and expand broadband access to at least 580,000 people.

The funding was made available through an International Development Association (IDA) grant that will support the Government of Mozambique's efforts to increase access to energy and broadband services, as well as strengthen the operational performance of the country's electricity utility. "Mozambique's economy can benefit from systematically harnessing the synergies of energy and digital connectivity in rural and fragile areas to increase economic productivity, promote inclusive growth, and build resilience in a sustainable manner," said Idah Z. Pswarayi-Riddihough, WB Director for Mozambique Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles.

"We will focus on providing energy to the poor, those displaced by the conflict, and essential social services, such as schools and hospitals, where private sector participation is limited. This funding will also help local companies fill market and capacity gaps and grow as reliable partners in energy supply and communications services," said Samuel Oguah, Senior Energy Specialist, and project team co-leader.

"Access to energy and information and communications technology (ICT) increasingly go hand in hand - electricity is needed to power digital devices and networks, while mobile communications and payments can unlock new business models for low-cost solar home system deployment," added Casey Torgusson , Senior Digital Development Specialist.
