"Escape" of inmates: Police say they are working to recapture the fugitives

“Fuga” de reclusos: Polícia diz estar a trabalhar na recaptura dos fugitivos

The Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) say they are on the ground working to recapture the inmates who escaped from Matola Central Prison in Maputo province on Wednesday afternoon.

Orlando Mudumane, spokesman for the PRM General Command, who was speaking to "Noticias", called on society to help identify the fugitives, some of whom are classified as dangerous given their criminal profile

The spokesman for the General Command of the PRM also said that the presence of these citizens outside the prison could lead to an increase in crime in the cities of Maputo, Matola and beyond, as these are individuals who have been convicted of committing various crimes, with a focus on terrorism, kidnapping, car theft, including armed robbery, voluntary homicide and the sexual violation of women.

It should be noted that following the confusion that broke out during the prisoners' escape, at least 33 people, mostly inmates, were shot dead by the police.
