Train reconnects Mozambique and Malawi 37 years later

The Mozambique Ports and Railways Company has announced the restart of rail transport operations on the Cena line, on the Dona-Ana-Vila-Nova-da-Fronteira branch, which runs from Beira to Malawi 37 years later.

The material left the Port of Beira last Friday and belongs to the Chinese company CR20, which is responsible for rebuilding the line in the neighboring country.

The implementation of the project, which is certainly extremely important given the challenges of the logistics chain in the southern region of Africa, follows a direction given during the meeting between the presidents of Mozambique and Malawi.

"This project aims to connect the Port of Beira and neighboring Malawi; it is known that more than 80% of cargo to and from Malawi was used by the Cena line and this Dona-Ana Vila-Nova-da-Fronteira branch," said Boaventura Mahave, CFM's railway director and responsible for the reconstruction of the Dona Ana-Vila-Nova-da-Fronteira line.

In all, there are 44 kilometers of railway line to Malawian territory. CFM will invest 30 million dollars to rebuild the line.

With the railroad, each wagon will be able to carry 82 tons, compared to 66 previously, and the speed of movement will increase from 30 km/h to 60km/h. The cargo to be transported per year will be 30 million tons.

It is expected that in the first phase, the operationalization of the railway line will allow freight trains to run from the Port of Beira to Malawi and, later, passenger trains.
