The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, will begin a four-day working visit to New York on Tuesday, as part of the end of Mozambique's term as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MINEC) states that as a Non-Permanent Member of the SC since January 2023, Mozambique has chaired the body twice, the first time in March 2023 and the second time last May.
During its presidency, Mozambique led debates on priority issues on its agenda, namely maintaining international peace and security; combating climate change and protecting biodiversity.
It has also led debates on the impact of conflicts on women and children; the use of technology for sustainable development; and support for dialogue on CS reforms.
The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and the minister, led the relevant debates of Mozambique's two presidencies.
Mozambique was admitted to the SC for the 2023-2024 biennium.
On his entry to the SC, Nyusi stated that the country recognizes the primary responsibility of the UN SC in matters relating to the maintenance of international peace and security.
The note quotes the Mozambican head of state as having pledged to help "collaborate in the design, implementation and reinforcement of common approaches that drive the most appropriate response to all these global threats".
At the time, Verónica Macamo pointed out that the "added value" of Mozambique's participation in the SC, which has 15 permanent members, was in the context of strengthening multilateralism, permanent dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.
She will witness the final days of Mozambique's accession to the SC, currently chaired by the United States of America, until the end of December.
On her visit to New York, Verónica Macamo will be accompanied by Mozambique's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Pedro Comissário, and the director of International Organizations and Conferences at MINEC, Ambassador José Morais.
