Sofala: twenty four people die in road accident

Sofala: vinte quatro pessoas morrem em acidente de viação

Twenty-four people died and another 20 were injured, 12 of them seriously, as a result of a road accident involving a bus belonging to the Dondo Municipal Transport Company in Sofala.

However, sources quoted by "O Pais" say that the data is preliminary, as the process of counting deaths and survivors is still ongoing.

The passenger bus was traveling on the Dondo-Beira route. Irregular overtaking by the driver of this vehicle may have been the cause of the accident.

Faced with the despair and agony of the passengers, the driver hit the accelerator hard and tried to overtake a truck and a minibus on a descent towards the bridge over the Muzimbite River. Unsuccessful in his irregular and fatal maneuver, he crashed violently into the two vehicles and then dragged the bus he was driving into the river, according to witnesses.

The survivors were taken to the city of Beira, where they received first aid, and the fatalities to the district of Mafambisse, according to the source.
