Health: country gains another specialist in gynecological oncology

Saúde: país ganha mais um especialista em oncologia ginecológica

The country has just gained another specialist in gynecological oncology, thus expanding the capacity for diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancers affecting the female reproductive system..

This is Edgar Sebastião, who joins the only three Mozambican oncogynecologists working at the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM).

The training of this new specialist was carried out in Brazil and is part of a project started in 2017 by the International Society of Gynecological Oncology, in partnership with the MD Anderson Oncology Center at the University of Texas and five Brazilian institutions, says a note from the HCM quoted by "Noticias."

"The new specialist will be placed in the central region of the country, reducing the concentration of specialized services in the city of Maputo and expanding access to the diagnosis and treatment of gynaecological neoplasms," reads the same note.

Also according to the note we've been quoting, the HCM's Gynecology Oncology Service, where activities such as prevention, screening, diagnosis and surgical, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment are carried out, stands out as a national reference.

"Cervical cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the country and is the main pathology treated in this service.

The creation of a Training and Research Center at the HCM has enabled the development of studies that could contribute to new approaches to combating this public health problem," the publication says.
