The town of Mocímboa da Praia will benefit from an urban redevelopment inserted in the Cabo Delgado province reconstruction plan to improve the life of the population and reinforce the security of the neighborhoods.
The need to review the planning of that village was expressed, this Monday, by the Director of the Provincial Environment Services in Cabo Delgado, Reinildo Jamane, who stressed the goal of creating better conditions for people who will return to the village.
The first terrorist attack in Cabo Delgado focused on Mocímboa da Praia on October 5, 2017, coming to be described as the base of the insurgents ravaging the province.
After more than a year in rebel hands, Mocímboa da Praia was looted and almost all public and private infrastructure was destroyed, as well as energy, water, communications and hospital systems.
In total, some 62,000 people, almost the entire population, have left the coastal town due to the conflict over the past four years, most notably the mass escapes that occurred after rebel actions intensified in June 2020.
The rehabilitation of destroyed state infrastructures in at least seven districts affected by the armed conflict in Cabo Delgado will cost around 638 million meticais, according to figures released in July by the Ministry of State Administration and Public Function, reports Lusa.
Most of the money will be used to rebuild state infrastructures in Mocímboa da Praia, among the most affected by the armed violence in Northern Mozambique.
Overall, the Cabo Delgado Reconstruction Plan, approved by Mozambique's Council of Ministers in September last year, is budgeted at around 19 billion meticais and aims to respond to the destruction as well as the humanitarian crisis caused by the armed attacks that broke out in the province in 2017.
