Província de Maputo já conta com quase 2000 casos de conjuntivite hemorrágica

The disease of the moment is tending to spread in Maputo province. Figures show that the province has already had more than 1900 cases of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis since the outbreak of the disease.

The district of Matola is the epicenter of contamination, with 1,237 cases diagnosed, mostly in people over the age of 15, according to Armando Chabane, an ophthalmologist at the Provincial Health Service in Maputo.

Quoted by Rádio Moçambique, Joana Nachaque, a clinical doctor at Matola Provincial Hospital, said that around 70 cases of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis are registered every day.

Faced with this scenario, the health authorities are reiterating their call to reinforce collective and individual hygiene, avoiding the use of home treatments in cases of contamination.

Health sector technicians are also working to raise awareness among the population in communities and health facilities in order to stop the chain of transmission.

It should be noted that the first cases of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis in Maputo province were recorded on February 13.

According to the Ministry of Health, conjunctivitis is caused by a virus and is highly contagious. Hemorrhagic conjunctivitis is self-limiting (with a beginning, middle and end, and which can end without treatment) and is not serious, lasting from 7 to 10 days.
