As of April 1, teachers in the provinces of Manica, Cabo Delgado and Nampula are threatening to suspend their activities due to non-payment of overtime and second class allowances for the years 2021 to 2023.
The president of the National Association of Teachers (ANAPRO), Isaque Marrengula, who passed on the information yesterday, stressed that the organization has received pressure from members who are demotivated due to the lack of payment.
"The provinces of Manica, Cabo Delgado and 11 districts of Nampula have not received the payments due so far and the government has not provided clear explanations as to the reasons behind the delay. The lack of information has discouraged the group and, as a result, they feel undervalued," he explained.
According to the representative in Manica, quoted by "Notícias", the situation is critical, since the debt dates back to 2021.
Meanwhile, in the other provinces and Maputo city, payments are not being made to all teachers, which has led to confusion.
"The class expected to receive at least 75% of the amount owed, but so far only 10% has been paid. There are cases where only ten teachers from a school, out of a total of 30, have received the amount, and the rest are still uncertain," the source explained.
He also pointed out that the devaluation of the teaching profession is evidenced by the non-payment of the 13th salary to hundreds of teachers, which can negatively affect the quality of teaching and learning.
"We are open to dialog to understand how the payment is being made and when the debt for 2021 will be settled. Otherwise, we're going to paralyze activities, because there are no conditions for us to continue," he said.
The government promised last February to proceed with the payment of overtime owed to teachers. However, the way in which the payment has been made has not been to the liking of the teachers, who remain dissatisfied.
