A group of inspectors from the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) will be deployed to investigate and combat cases of corruption involving the Traffic Police (PT), according to the corporation's commander-general, Bernardino Rafael.
This group of professionals will conduct patrols at traffic stations to catch agents who extort motorists.
"We will deploy teams of inspectors to police all officers who commit these irregularities. Offenders will be removed and held criminally responsible," he stated.
Bernardino Rafael called on traffic officials to stop "disturbing motorists."
"Don't steal time and don't slow down. Make people's lives easier by simplifying the work of enforcement," he stressed.
The commander-general of the PRM criticized the illegal appropriation of drivers' personal documents by traffic officers as a form of psychological coercion to pay a bribe.
The PRM will also take action to eliminate other branches of the corporation that exercise traffic control so that this competence will be solely that of the specialized police.
"That's a lot of entities performing the same role and in different places," he said.
The Mozambican PT has already been considered by several reports as one of the most corrupt institutions of the Mozambican state, being even accused of being part of the causes of road accidents in the country by allowing irregular driving situations in exchange for bribes.
