The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) has already sent a group of inspectors to Cabo Delgado province to investigate alleged ill-treatment by agents of the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) in some regions of the province, according to the newspaper "Notícias".
The newspaper says that the measure was taken by the General Commander of PRM, Bernardino Rafael, after denunciations made at a popular meeting that he himself directed in the district of Macomia.
People who spoke at the meeting complained of cases of torture, whose authorship is attributed to agents of the UIR (formerly the dreaded FIR, Rapid Intervention Force) which, since 2017, has been supporting in counter-terrorism efforts in Cabo Delgado.
On that occasion, Bernardino Rafael ficured that the bad performance of UIR agents is characterized by physical aggression and extortion, with young people being the main victims.
"Those who are deviating from the mission of protecting and harming the population should be expelled from the Police, because they are not yet prepared to protect the population. We will take severe measures, because we want to see the population proud of the work of its Police, whose primary mission is to protect them," he promised.
The head of the PRM advanced, even before the results of the investigation, that the UIR will be reoriented out of the village of Macomia, and should move to forward positions and many close to the line of battle.
Meanwhile, more than 7,000 people from the administrative post of Chai, in the same district, who abandoned their homes and took refuge in the bush following the terrorist attacks are calling for an immediate restoration of the climate of security so that they can return to their home areas.
The displaced people told the Police Commander General that they live in difficult conditions, since they lack almost everything. As they lamented, they go hungry, because they do not produce.
