Angolan President João Lourenço defends dialogue as the best solution to the post-election crisis in Mozambique, which erupted after the vote on October 9.
According to Angop, Lourenço expressed this sentiment in his speech at the opening of the VIII Extraordinary Congress of the MPLA, Angola's ruling party, a two-day event that began on Monday (16).
The event aims to discuss adjustments to the party's statute and the thesis on the 50th anniversary of National Independence, which will be celebrated on November 11 next year.
Lourenço called on the Mozambican authorities, political parties and civil society to work to find the best solutions to overcome the post-election crisis, otherwise it would affect peace and security, the physical integrity of citizens and the economy of Mozambique and neighboring countries.
"This explosive situation that the world is experiencing increasingly justifies the urgent need to reform the United Nations system, particularly its Security Council, which no longer reflects the current reality, hence its inoperability in the face of worsening conflicts, which could lead to a confrontation with unpredictable consequences for universal peace and security," he said.
For almost two months, the country has been in the grip of post-election tension, caused by demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Podemos party.
The demonstrations were called in protest at the results of the October 9 general elections, which gave victory to Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, according to the National Electoral Commission (CNE).
