Saving during the festive season

Poupar em tempos de festas

December can become a real enemy to your savings if you don't use your income carefully and thoughtfully. From gifts to food, clothing and shoes, there are endless tempting promotions that can often lead you astray from your savings goals.

But it doesn't always have to be this way, even during the festive season, there are tricks that can help you save money. Before venturing out shopping, think carefully and spend wisely, putting emotions and consumerism aside.
Check out the tips from Nancy Mafundza, Head of Retail at FNB Mozambique.

Define your budget

"First of all, work out how much you can afford to spend on the upcoming festivities," advises Nancy, who also points out that, "do your sums and see how much you can comfortably pay during this period without having to resort to credit or your savings. Be cautious and stick to your budget limits, don't buy on impulse".

Make a list and stick to it

This sage advice, which requires a little discipline, cannot be stressed enough. When planning your shopping at this time of year, list the following items by priority and importance: household items, non-perishable groceries and school supplies for the children. But always remember to stick to your budget.

Research before doing your shopping

Do your research on how much the item you want to buy usually costs before you buy it. To avoid going from store to store, you can use the internet to compare prices and find out about promotions or campaigns, which are a good opportunity to save.

Find out about guarantees and return policies

When buying household appliances or technological gadgets, for example, make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the guarantees. When buying clothing or footwear to give away, check the return policy and time limitations.

Invest in meaningful gifts

Good gifts are those that touch the hearts of those who receive them! Therefore, the amount of money you spend is not synonymous with a great gift. Think about the person you're giving it to and what they value or even need.

DIY (Do-It-Yourself) - Offer your time and talent

Do you know how to make cookies, jams or craft items that everyone loves? These are great, inexpensive ideas to give to friends and family, as well as having your own special touch.

Don't get lost in the Christmas decorations

Think ecologically and waste-consciously! Take the opportunity to recycle decorations from previous years and, with a little imagination, give them a new look.

Buy with confidence

Make sure you are shopping safely and stay alert to avoid being defrauded, both in stores and online. Remember that you should never share your PIN or bank details.

"End-of-year promotions can actually be great allies for acquiring items you need and have been saving up for for some time. However, make sure you don't regret the money you spend by following the tips above," concludes Nancy Mafundza.
