WFP closes southern Africa office

The World Food Program (WFP) may close its southern Africa office due to funding constraints, the United Nations agency revealed yesterday.

The WFP receives almost half of its donations from the United States, which is cutting foreign aid contracts around the world as part of President Donald Trump's "America First" agenda.

The WFP's regional spokesman, Tomson Phiri, said that the agency will manage its operations in the southern African region from Nairobi, Kenya. He added, according to Reuters, quoted by "Noticias", that this would not affect operations in southern African countries, where the WFP is assisting millions of drought-stricken people.

"The aim is to maximize funds and direct them to our frontline teams," said Phiri, who meanwhile refused to comment on whether the decision was directly related to US aid cuts, saying only that "the prospect of donor funding has become more restricted".
