The United Nations resolution condemning the Russian annexation of Ukrainian territories received, this Wednesday, the vote of Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP), namely, Angola, Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. Mozambique abstained and Sao Tome and Principe was absent from the vote. Other Portuguese-speaking countries, Brazil and Portugal, also voted in favor.
Russia proceeded with the annexation of four Ukrainian territories partially occupied as a result of the armed invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022.
Russia itself voted against the resolution, as well as Belarus, North Korea, Nicaragua, and Syria. In total there were 143 votes in favor, five against and 35 abstentions.
In relation to previous votes, Cape Verde kept the same vote against Russia, Angola, which had chosen to abstain has now voted in favor, and Guinea-Bissau has now voted for the first time.
The majority of those who abstained, with China at the head, are African countries.
