Ossufo Momade promises new north-south rail line

Ossufo Momade promete nova linha ferroviária norte-sul

Ossufo Momade, Renamo's presidential candidate, promised to build a new railway line running from the north to the south of the country.

Speaking at an election rally in Marrupa, in the northern province of Niassa, Momade said that a new line would relieve pressure on the country's main north-south highway (EN1).

"We're going to build a new railroad to end congestion on the EN1 and guarantee safety and better circulation of people and goods," he said, as quoted by AIM. "I will do this as soon as I am elected to the presidency," he promised.

Mozambique has three major rail networks, but they all run from the coast to the inland countries and are not interconnected.

The Renamo candidate did not suggest how the proposed railroad could be paid for, or how long it would take to build.

In fact, this has been one of the great mistakes of almost all the presidential candidates: they make promises but don't explain how they will materialize them.
