At least eleven people died in the early hours of the 24th in the city of Maputo, when a group of supposed protesters tried to loot goods from an electrical appliances store in the George Dimitrov neighborhood, known as Benfica.
The act took place when, on Tuesday night, these individuals went to the warehouse allegedly with the intention of removing products that were in storage. Moments later, a fire broke out, the police told the newspaper "O País".
"What we found is that the individuals who climbed up there were aware that there were video surveillance cameras there. In order to conceal the capture of any image that could be identified later, they set off some objects to create smoke and these precipitated the fire," said PRM spokesman Leonel Muchina.
The material damage, according to the PRM spokesman, is extensive, given that the fire has consumed almost all the property that was on the premises. Faced with the situation, the police are appealing to the population to remain calm so that scenarios of this nature don't happen again.
Muchina also said that it was not true that the police set fire to the place, as some witnesses had said.
For Muchina, such people may be trying to escape responsibility by blaming police officers.
