Niassa: Police shoot seven PODEMOS supporters in Mecanhelas

Niassa: Polícia baleia sete simpatizantes do PODEMOS em Mecanhelas

The village of Insaca, in the district of Mecanhelas, in Niassa, experienced a typical war scene yesterday, October 26, with the police firing sequences of shots for a few minutes. The result was that seven PODEMOS supporters were shot.

According to CIP Eleições, it all started when members of PODEMOS went to demonstrate in front of the Frelimo district committee where its members were gathered to welcome their front-runner for governor of Niassa to celebrate her "victory" in the October 9 general elections.

The police set up a security cordon to prevent a confrontation between the two parties. However, PODEMOS supporters, wielding stones, tires and sticks, broke through the cordon and forced the police to retreat close to the Frelimo elements.

The PODEMOS decided to set themselves on fire, burning tires and sticks. They are said to have thrown a rock that injured the head of the local administrative post. The police started shooting to disperse them.

After the shots were fired, the PODEMOS members fled and dozens of police officers (in uniform and plain clothes) chased them and fired intensely. PODEMOS is contesting the electoral fraud while Frelimo is celebrating it.

According to the CIP Elections Bulletin, there were at least seven boiling victims, two of them in serious condition, who were transferred to Cuamba, Niassa's second most important city. (Source: CIP Elections)
