Nampula: Storm Jude has already claimed five lives

Nampula: Tempestade “Jude” já fez cinco óbitos

In Nampula province, at least five people have died in the last few hours during the passage of tropical cyclone "Jude", authorities working on the ground have confirmed.

The mayor of Nacala, Faruk Nuro, said that the four deaths were recorded in his territory, caused by collapsed houses.

"We have recorded four deaths from collapsed houses and teams from the municipality are collecting other data. The situation here in Nacala is critical and it's still raining," said Faruk Nuro, quoted by AIM.

According to the source, the heavy rain that accompanied Cyclone Jude caused a huge crater to open in the lower part of the city, putting nearby buildings at risk and affecting the movement of people and goods.

"We have families sheltering in schools and our advice is for people to reinforce the security of their homes and look for safe places to protect themselves," he added.

The fifth death occurred in the Meconta district and three others were injured, said the district permanent secretary Albino Mucuna, who was contacted by journalists by telephone.

Local authorities report that many families are homeless and have been taken by the local government to nearby schools.

According to weather reports, Mossuril was the gateway to Trapical Cyclone Jude, and the city of Nacala was also hit hard.

It should be noted that Jude is the third cyclone to hit Nampula province since last December, having been preceded by Chico and Dikeledi, which left a trail of destruction with great impact.
