Nampula: WFP says some 57,000 children are at risk of running out of food

Nampula: PMA diz que cerca de 57 mil crianças estão em risco de ficar sem alimentação

Around 57,000 children could be left without school meals in the current academic year in Nampula province, due to a lack of funding, warns the UN World Food Program.

"This funding gap is [...] affecting the school feeding program in Nampula. The current resources do not allow it to continue throughout 2025," says the WFP report, quoted by Notícias ao Minuto.

The deficit also threatens the continuity of the School Feeding Program (Pronae), which combats food and nutritional insecurity among schoolchildren in Mozambique.

In July last year, the Norwegian government disbursed 3.3 million euros to the WFP to strengthen food systems adapted to climate change and expand school feeding programs in southern Mozambique.

With the funding, around 500 small farmers diversified their agricultural production and 17,000 elementary school children had greater access to nutritious meals to improve school attendance.
