Maputo municipality: debts jeopardize garbage collection

Município de Maputo:  dívidas comprometem recolha de lixo

The Municipality of Maputo is not collecting garbage in some neighborhoods due to a lack of money to pay debts to companies that provide the service.

This scenario has turned these neighborhoods into veritable garbage dumps, which is a threat to the public health of residents.

Meanwhile, the Councillor for Infrastructure and Health, João Munguambe, says that the problem is known to the public, but at the moment there is little that can be done to settle the debts due to financial constraints.

"Although we recognize this debt, we also have current expenses, in addition to managing old debts, we have to find a budget to manage current and previous accounts," explained Munguambe, quoted by "O Pais".

Munguambe also says that the money paid by residents in garbage tax is not enough to cover the costs of waste collection and adds that residents have been creating too much garbage, which calls for new collection strategies.
In the city of Maputo, the neighborhoods of Chamanculo, Maxaquene and Munhuana are the most critical in terms of living with garbage.
