World Cup 2022: FIFA to detect "offside" with semi-automatic technology

Mundial 2022: FIFA vai detectar “fora de jogo” com tecnologia semi-automática

The Video Referee team will receive an alert from a semi-automatic technology about possible offside situations during the Qatar 2022 World Cup, according to the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

This technology, which is based on 3D animation, is not necessarily new, as it had already been tested in other FIFA competitions.

For FIFA, the technology will be a support tool to help referees, on and off the field, to make better and faster decisions.

Following the successful use of VAR technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said he would "harness the full potential of technology in soccer and further enhance VAR."

The technology uses 12 cameras mounted under the stadium ceiling to track the ball and up to 29 data points from each individual player, 50 times per second, calculating their exact position on the field.

"This technology is the culmination of three years of research and testing dedicated to providing the best for the teams, players and fans who will be going to Qatar later this year, and FIFA is proud of that work," said Gianni Infantino.

The World Cup in Qatar runs from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
