The Pan-African social agency, Crtve DEVELOPMENT (CD), has launched the WE! ARE "WE! WE ARE" to build a pan-African voice on climate justice ahead of the United Nations on Climate Change (COP 27), reports a statement from the agency that we have had access to.
The document says that although it contributes the least to climate change, the African continent is the hardest hit by the global climate crisis.
According to Josefa Sacko, AU Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture, it is estimated that up to 118 million impoverished people will be exposed to droughts, floods and extreme heat in Africa by 2030 if adequate response measures are not implemented.
Those with less capacity to cope and adapt to these climate change impacts will face a more significant threat.
"Despite the profound repercussions of climate change on human rights and social justice, climate justice remains one of the least understood and socialized policy issues in contemporary African development" reads the document we had access to.
Okito Wedi, founder and CEO of Crtve DEVELOPMENT, stated that "through the WE! ARE, we want to harness the power of art and creativity to change the narrative on climate change and development in Africa and bridge the gap between the communities who will be most affected and the policy makers who will determine our climate future."
The WE! ARE aims to inspire young people across the continent to share their vision of the Africa they want to see and express their communities' demands for climate justice through creative means.
The movement is championed by emerging and established creatives, policy makers, designers, visual artists, hearing artists, and community leaders across Africa.
Collectively, the champions and supporters of WE! ARE will shape the broader climate justice narrative and center important policy issues for their respective communities and nations leading up to COP27 and beyond.
Of note, Crtve Development (CD) is a pan-African social agency that advocates for change on the African continent through narratives and campaigns on key issues. We harness the power of art, technology, journalism and research to advocate for African-owned and African-led development that bridges the gap between people and policy.
COP 27 is scheduled to take place next November in Egypt. It is a unique moment for the continent to raise its voice in the climate discourse.
