The first President of independent Namibia and national hero, Sam Nujoma, died on Saturday evening at the age of 95.
The announcement was made this Sunday by the country's current president on his social media account X.
"It is therefore with the greatest sadness and regret that I announce this morning, February 9, 2025, to the Namibian people, our African brothers and sisters and the world at large, of the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader, His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma.
President Nujoma passed away at the age of 95 on February 8 at 23h45 in Windhoek, Namibia," wrote Nangolo Mbumba, the current president of Namibia, on his social network X.
Nujoma had been in hospital for three weeks due to health problems, receiving treatment and medical observation, and lost his life last Saturday night.
The current president of Namibia praised Sam Nujoma in his message of condolence.
"Our venerable leader, Dr. Nujoma, not only paved the way for freedom, but also inspired us to rise up and become masters of this vast land of our ancestors," the Presidency wrote in the X.
The note also mentions the longevity of the leader and hero of the Namibian people. "Our Founding Father lived a long and consistent life during which he served the people of his beloved country exceptionally well. Our Founding Father heroically commanded the Namibian people during the darkest hours of our liberation struggle until the attainment of freedom and independence on March 21, 1990," reads the message.
