Moisés Manjate, one of the pioneers of Marrabenta, has died

Mozambican artist Moisés Manjate, founder and member of Orquesta Djambo, died today at the age of 104.

According to reports in the national press, Moisés da Conceição Manjate, his full name, was largely responsible for the evolutionary process and stylization of Marrabenta in Mozambique and will forever be known as the author of the song "Elisa we gomara saia".

According to the same sources, Moisés Manjate was born on February 4, 1920. He learned to play the guitar on his own, and his first public performance was at the invitation of the Colonial Administration, at the then Centro Associativo dos Negros da Colónia de Moçambique, now Centro Cultural Ntsindya, located in the city of Maputo.
