The government, through the National Directorate for Livestock Development, has banned the importation of cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, their meat and by-products, as well as ruminants and wild fodder woven for cattle feed, from South Africa.
The ban follows an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in South Africa's northwestern provinces of Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal.
This provision does not prohibit the import of pasteurized dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt and cream), heat-treated meats (canned goods and sausages) or pharmaceutical substances.
That neighboring country's Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Development, which reported the outbreak, said the farms and other linked farms have been quarantined, while work is underway to determine the extent of the outbreak.
