Mozambique records hottest year ever

Moçambique regista ano mais quente de sempre

Two thousand and twenty-four was the hottest year ever in Mozambique, with an average temperature of 1.2 degrees Celsius above the normal for the last 75 years, according to the State of the Climate Report, released on Monday in Maputo.

The document, quoted by "Notícias", is by the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), which assesses the behavior of the climate and shares recent information on meteorological events and their impacts.

Rising temperatures are intensifying the occurrence of extreme events such as floods, droughts, cyclones and storms, leading to deaths and negative impacts on key development sectors, the document indicates.

In 2024, the highest temperature was 44.5 degrees Celsius, recorded on October 28 in Chingodzi, Tete province.

Faced with the current scenario, Nilsa Miquidade, permanent secretary at the Ministry of Communications and Digital Transformation (MCTD), advocates implementing actions to improve the technical capacity of the key sectors that deal with the hydro-meteorological and climate component in order to reduce risks and strengthen resilience in the country.

He added, according to the "Noticias" publication, that the government is implementing actions to mitigate the impacts of adverse phenomena, with emphasis on the Early Warning System for all; the One District, One Weather Station program; the installation of weather radars; and the Systematic Observations Financing Mechanism (SOFF) project.

Adérito Aramuge, INAM's director-general, says that the climatic events recorded over the last 75 years highlight the growing challenges of predicting climate systems, requiring robust scientific analysis and the development of coordinated actions to mitigate their impacts.

He said there was a need for institutional investment to ensure the improvement of the State of the Climate report, because its preparation requires a nationwide observation network, modern processing technologies, data analysis, human training and money.

In addition to the State of the Climate Report, the event also saw the launch of the Real-Time Situational Impact Monitoring Platform, in honor of World Meteorology Day, marked on March 23.

The tool aims to provide and disseminate various climate products.
