The Mozambican Executive calls for the "exercise of moderation" in the war between Russia and Ukraine, and that "constructive dialogue" should be given precedence for the cessation of military hostilities.
This positioning could lead to a lasting political solution, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation quoted by rtp.
For the Ministry, the solution to the conflict must be based on the "cardinal principles of the United Nations Charter, so as to ensure the peaceful coexistence of the parties to the conflict," which could have "dire consequences" for Europe and the world.
On the other hand, the government assured that it is in contact with the approximately 15 Mozambicans who fled Ukraine because of the conflicts, and is already receiving support from their compatriots in neighboring countries
"Of the total number of the students [15 in Ukraine], four are in Poland, five in Hungary, two in Romania, one in Moldova, two on their way to Slovakia and one who is already in Mozambique," the Ministry note adds.
However, the honorary consul of Ukraine in Maputo, Abílio Soeiro, said that he indicated there are 18 Mozambican students in Ukraine.
At the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, five countries voted against the resolution demanding an end to the Russian invasion and Mozambique, like Angola, abstained.
This ministerial communiqué is the first reaction from the Government of Mozambique since the beginning of the military incursions on February 24, 2022.
