The commercial agreement to supply additional electricity to the Republic of South Africa (RSA) is being finalized, as a way of helping the neighbouring country to minimize the crisis it is facing, according to Noticias.
According to the publication, a team led by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME), Carlos Zacarias, recently met with the South African counterpart in order to create the conditions for the agreement to become operational as soon as possible.
According to the source, the document formalizing the increase in electricity has been signed between the governments of the two countries and the final details of the deal are currently being worked out.
He defended the importance of making the implementation of ongoing projects in the country more flexible in order to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the market.
He said he had warned his South African counterpart to encourage companies linked to the energy sector to take an interest in the investments underway in Mozambique.
For his part, the South African Minister of Energy and Electricity, Kgosientso Ramokgopa, said that his country needs Mozambique's partnership to use natural gas as a fuel to replace fossil fuels such as coal and oil.
Aware that Mozambique represents one of the most lucrative gas markets in Africa, Ramokgopa believes that the agreement between the two countries could help South Africa in its energy transition.
"We're going to sign the document, but the most important thing is to change the lives of our people. Mozambique can help guarantee increased universal access to energy... we can have more people getting electricity and support industry," he said.
He added that the agreement will alleviate the load crisis, a problem that is close to being solved, not least because South Africa hasn't had cuts for 150 days. Even so, he said that there is a need to convert natural gas into electricity and Mozambique is key to this transition. (Source: Notícias)
