Mozambique ends its term on the Security Council

Moçambique encerra mandato no Conselho de Segurança

Today, Mozambique formally ends its historic term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the body to which it was unanimously elected on June 9, 2022.

The country began its two-year term on January 1, 2023, along with Ecuador, Japan, Malta and Switzerland.

Cited by Notícias, Verónica Macamo, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, believes that the Mozambicans who took part in this mission gave their all to make it a success.

He explained that several teams appointed to Mozambique's mission in New York, the headquarters of the United Nations, had formed a single team to do the job.

"It's not an easy mission, because every day we discuss issues of peace and security all over the world and, as we know, in recent times, unfortunately, there have been many sensitive and delicate issues," she said, quoted in the publication.

Macamo also said that this mission was good, not least because there is recognition from the Secretary-General himself, António Guterres, that Mozambique has brought other paradigms and other ways of resolving conflicts.

He said that Mozambique believes that instead of producing resolutions condemning one country or another, it is necessary to call the parties to the dispute to a dialog.
