Mozambique and Germany agree new Climate and Development Partnership

Moçambique e Alemanha acordam nova Parceria para o Clima e o Desenvolvimento

Mozambique and Germany are strengthening their long-standing cooperation, especially on climate action through a new partnership for climate and development.

The head of delegation, César Francisco de Gouveia Júnior, and the German Secretary of State, Jochen Flasbarth, signed a joint declaration of intent on climate change.

"Every year, Mozambique is affected by 2 or 3 cyclones, with deep devastation on each occasion. We need partners to mitigate the negative impact of climate change. We therefore welcome the new Partnership for Climate and Development," said César Francisco de Gouveia Júnior, after signing the partnership.

For his part, Jochen Flasbarth said that Mozambique has made a name for itself internationally with its strong commitment to reform and a sustainable energy and climate policy. "The new partnership for climate and development will give new impetus to our bilateral cooperation - not just in the areas of energy and climate protection."

Germany has offered Mozambique an ambitious climate and development partnership to support the country in implementing its climate and energy policy, strengthen its climate resilience, and consolidate and expand its position as a regional renewable energy hub in southern Africa.

At COP 28, the country presented an ambitious strategy for a just energy transition and joined the "G7 Climate Club" at the invitation of the German government.

After the German-Mozambican intergovernmental negotiations in Berlin on June 19 and 20, 2024, it was agreed to continue and deepen the successful cooperation. As a result, the German side pledged a total of 90 million euros for new development projects, of which 10 million euros would be channeled within the framework of the climate and development partnership.

Elias Jaime Zimba, Ambassador of the Republic of Mozambique to Germany, said that "the new projects support the achievement of the Mozambican government's objectives and will help improve the lives of many Mozambicans".

It should be noted that Mozambique and Germany have a reliable and long-standing partnership. Germany is one of the country's largest bilateral development partners. Mozambique is a strategically important player in Southern Africa.

Since 2022, development cooperation has focused on three central themes: Peace & Social Cohesion, with the action areas of Good Governance, and Displaced Persons and Migration; Sustainable Economic Development, Training and Employment, with the action areas of Vocational Training and Private and Financial Sector Development; Climate and Energy, and Just Transition, with the action area of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Germany will continue to stand by Mozambique as a reliable partner and has pledged to continue implementing bilateral development cooperation in the agreed areas of action.
